Texts are being generated automatically, software writes programming code, chatbots take over parts of customer service, and analysis tools perform tasks that previously required specialized professionals. If you wonder whether your profession will still exist in five years, it is neither irrational nor anti-technology.

This concern only becomes problematic when a possible development is already internally transformed into a fixed future. From “AI could take over some of my tasks” comes the thought: “I will lose my job and no longer be needed professionally.” However, there is a significant difference between these two statements.

It is at this exact point where current labor market research and Stoic philosophy meet. Science helps you assess what we actually know about the future of work. The Stoics show you how to deal with the part of the future that cannot be reliably calculated.

Their answer lies neither in blind optimism nor in passive resignation. It begins with a more precise question: What is actually happening, what could happen, and about what are you already passing judgment even though the future is still open?

Will AI Really Destroy Millions of Jobs?

Many forecasts regarding artificial intelligence use the term “exposure.” This means that certain activities within a profession could fundamentally be changed or partially automated by AI. Exposure, however, does not automatically mean that the entire profession disappears.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) investigated nearly 30,000 professional tasks together with the Polish Research Institute NASK. The report published in 2025 concluded that approximately one in four jobs worldwide is exposed to generative AI in some form. At the same time, the authors emphasized that the transformation of professions is much more likely than their complete replacement. Office, administrative, and data entry tasks are particularly affected. However, highly qualified activities in financial analysis, software development, and media production are also increasingly exposed.

In 2026, the ILO once again explicitly warned against interpreting such exposure values as predictions of specific job losses. A system may be technically capable of performing a task without companies immediately implementing it. Costs, susceptibility to errors, data protection, liability, acceptance, and organizational processes influence whether a theoretically automatable activity is actually automated.

This distinction is crucial. A profession rarely consists of only one task. A doctor does not only diagnose, a teacher does not only convey information, and a customer service representative does not only answer standardized questions. Professions include responsibility, trust, communication, prioritization, and the ability to handle unusual situations. AI can take over individual components while others gain in importance.

This is not a guarantee that there will be no job losses. In some areas, companies will manage with fewer staff. New professional roles may emerge without being available to the affected people at the same place, at the same time, or with the same qualifications. The sentence “Technological change also creates new work” offers little help if your specific position is eliminated and the new work requires different skills.

A realistic attitude must therefore tolerate two things simultaneously: AI will not completely eliminate many professions, but it can significantly change task profiles, entry paths, wages, and the demand for specific skills.

Not Every Job and Not Every Person Carries the Same Risk

AI can accelerate work, but productivity gains do not determine who benefits from them.

Averages hide how unevenly technological changes may be distributed. The ILO found in 2026 that women more frequently work in professions that are heavily exposed to generative AI. In the countries surveyed, 29 percent of employment relationships held by women were affected, compared to 16 percent for men. One reason for this is the higher concentration of women in office, administrative, and support functions.

Entry-level employees could also be particularly affected. Many entry positions consist of tasks through which people have previously gained practical experience: summarizing information, preparing initial drafts, organizing data, or preparing simple analyses. If AI takes over these specific activities, it does not necessarily mean the entire profession disappears. However, it could become more difficult to navigate the path from beginner to experienced specialist.

This leads to a problem that is hardly visible in simple automation forecasts. A company may benefit in the short term if it requires fewer newcomers. In the long run, it may lack people who had sufficient opportunity to develop professional judgment.

Therefore, you should not only ask whether AI can take over your current tasks. You should also ask what function these tasks serve for your development. Some routine work may seem inefficient but conveys an understanding of errors, exceptions, and connections. If you hand it over to a system without learning the underlying principles, you will become faster, but not necessarily more competent.

For your professional future, it is therefore not only important whether AI can perform individual tasks. Crucial is how your employer uses the gained productivity and which human skills remain valuable alongside the technology.

What Productivity Studies Show and What They Don’t

Some of the best studies to date did not investigate how many jobs disappear, but rather how AI affects the performance of employees.

Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang had 453 academically trained professionals perform typical writing tasks. Participants with access to ChatGPT required an average of 40 percent less time, while the quality of their results increased by 18 percent. People whose performance was weaker without AI benefited particularly strongly.

Erik Brynjolfsson, Danielle Li, and Lindsey Raymond investigated 5,179 employees in customer service. Access to an AI assistant increased the number of cases resolved per hour by about 14 percent on average. Among less experienced and lower-performing employees, the increase was even approximately 34 percent. The most experienced employees benefited significantly less.

These results allow for two opposing developments. If a person can do more with AI, a company can perform the same work with fewer employees. However, it can also process more orders, improve services, or relieve employees from routine tasks. An increase in productivity alone does not say which of these possibilities will occur.

The studies also show that AI partially redistributes knowledge. An inexperienced employee can use an assistant system to access procedures more quickly that were previously mastered primarily by experienced colleagues. This can reduce performance differences. However, it can also lower the value of certain routine skills that were previously scarce.

For your professional future, it is therefore not only important whether AI can perform individual tasks. Crucial is how your employer uses the gained productivity and which human skills remain valuable alongside the technology.

Why Expertise Doesn’t Simply Become Meaningless Through AI

When an AI system generates a usable text, analysis, or piece of program code in a few seconds, it is easy to get the impression that the underlying expertise is no longer necessary. In fact, its function is changing.

Whoever had to produce a result themselves was primarily paid for production. Whoever works with AI must increasingly judge whether the generated result is correct, complete, and suitable for the specific context. For this, you often need more background knowledge, not less.

A linguistically convincing text can be factually incorrect. A functioning piece of program code can contain security problems. A seemingly precise analysis can be based on false premises. The better an AI system hides errors linguistically, the more important the ability to verify its results becomes.

Therefore, it is not only the knowledge you can recite from memory that remains valuable. Valuable are mental models with which you recognize when something might be wrong. Added to this are skills that are difficult to reduce to an isolated task: taking responsibility, weighing conflicting interests, understanding unspoken needs, and making decisions under incomplete information.

This does not mean that every qualified activity is safe. It means, however, that adaptation should be more than learning as many new programs as possible. Crucial is the connection of tool competence and judgment. You should learn what AI can do well without neglecting the skills you need to recognize its limits.

Why Uncertainty Itself Can Make You Sick

You do not actually have to lose your job for the fear of it to have consequences. In occupational psychology, a distinction is made between cognitive and affective job insecurity. The cognitive component concerns your assessment that a position might be at risk. The affective component describes the emotional reaction to it: worry, tension, and the feeling of having no control.

A meta-analysis by Lixin Jiang and Lindsey Lavaysse, which evaluated 535 independent samples, found correlations between job insecurity and 51 of the 56 outcomes studied. Emotional insecurity was generally more strongly linked to negative outcomes than the mere assessment of a risk.

Another systematic evaluation by Torkel Rönnblad and colleagues examined longitudinal studies on insecure employment. For job insecurity, an increased risk of psychological complaints was observed. The summarized Odds Ratio was 1.52. This does not mean that uncertainty automatically makes you sick. It shows, however, that a workplace perceived as constantly threatened is a serious psychosocial stress factor.

One reason for this is that a clear problem can be easier to deal with than a constant threat. After a dismissal, real difficulties arise, but also concrete tasks: settling finances, writing applications, requesting support. With undefined job anxiety, your nervous system remains on alert without a clear time for action being reached.

Psychological research describes a low ability to endure such open situations as an intolerance of uncertainty. A meta-analysis published in 2026 by Mehdi Akbari and colleagues evaluated 115 studies with a total of 28,693 participants. It showed a strong correlation between intolerance of uncertainty and persistent worry. Worry, in turn, mediated part of the link with various anxiety disorders.

This explains why new news about AI rarely provides lasting relief. You are looking for certainty even though research cannot yet provide it. Every new forecast only leads to another forecast.

Epictetus’ Sphere of Control is Not a Formula for Reassurance

Between uncertainty and action: Stoic judgment separates possible paths from seemingly fixed outcomes.

Epictetus begins his Manual of Morals with the distinction between things that are in our power and things that are not fully in our power. This statement is often reduced today to the formula: “Focus only on what you can control.”

This sounds simple, but it is philosophically imprecise. Epictetus did not mean that you should either fully control external things or ignore them completely. The area of your own agency, which he calls prohairesis, includes primarily your judgments, intentions, decisions, and actions. Whether these actions produce the desired result depends additionally on external conditions.

You can further your education, but you cannot guarantee that a company will hire you. You can use AI meaningfully, but you cannot determine how your industry uses it. You can organize against poor working conditions, but you cannot alone control an employer’s decision.

The workplace belongs to Epictetus among the external goods. This does not mean it would be worthless. Epictetus explicitly emphasizes that external things should be treated with care. Income, security, and professional belonging are important components of a human life. They are simply not a reliable basis for your moral value.

Stoicism therefore does not demand that you accept a dismissal with indifference. It demands that you do not tie your entire worth to something that depends on markets, superiors, and technical developments.

A Thought About the Future Is Not Yet a Fact

The Stoics developed a nuanced theory of mental impressions. An event, a piece of news, or an idea first produces an impression. You can agree with this impression, reject it, or withhold your judgment for the time being.

For example, you read: “AI could automate a significant portion of administrative tasks.” From this arises the impression: “My position is threatened.” Perhaps that is plausible. In the next step, however, it quickly becomes: “I will be fired.” Finally, follows: “Then I will no longer find comparable work.”

Only the first statement comes from the news. The following sentences are conclusions to which you have internally agreed.

Epictetus therefore recommended stopping a distressing impression and checking what it actually represents. For the fear of AI, you can use three categories:

What has already happened?

What is possible under certain conditions?

What am I currently treating as certain even though I do not know it?

This check should not downplay risks. It prevents your brain from confusing possibility, probability, and certainty.

A helpful addition consists of assigning an observable condition to every fear. Instead of “My profession will disappear,” you formulate: “If my employer automates certain tasks and simultaneously plans for fewer staff, the risk to my position increases.” Such a statement is less dramatic but more relevant for action. You can observe whether the mentioned conditions actually occur.

“External things do not touch the soul; they have no access to it. Disturbance arises only from the judgment within.”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 4.3

Preparation Instead of Constant Mental Alarm

The Stoic consideration of potential difficulties is often called premeditatio malorum. In this process, you consciously imagine an unwanted event to prepare your reaction to it. Marcus Aurelius began his day, for example, with the expectation of encountering difficult people. Seneca advised not to consider possible setbacks only when they occur.

This exercise differs from uncontrolled worrying. Worry always produces new variations of a danger. A meaningful premeditation, by contrast, ends with a plan.

Instead of spending an hour imagining how AI could destroy your professional existence, you can imagine a specific scenario for ten minutes: A significant part of your current tasks will be automated. Afterward, you answer four questions:

What financial and practical consequences would this have initially?

Which of my skills would still be transferable?

Whom could I ask for information or support?

What first step would I take within 48 hours?

After that, you end the exercise consciously. Its result should not be a long list of catastrophes, but a short list of possible reactions. In this way, you transform diffuse fear into limited preparation.

If the exercise intensifies your fear and you continue to brood afterward, it is not helpful for you in this form. Research on vivid worry and imaginative confrontation shows no simple effect that applies equally to every person. Stoic exercises are tools, not tests of courage.

The Reservation Clause: Acting Decisively Without Demanding Success

A less well-known Stoic concept is the reservation clause, in Greek hupexairesis. You pursue a goal determinedly but add it internally with the reservation: provided nothing occurs that reasonably stands in its way.

Applying this to your professional development means: “I will further qualify myself in this area and seek a new role, provided actual conditions allow for it.” The reservation does not weaken your goal. It prevents you from confusing an external result with personal failure.

Marcus Aurelius describes an inner attitude that adapts to what is possible and given. This is not aimless flexibility. You maintain your values while you change the specific strategy.

Perhaps a further education does not lead to the hoped-for position. Then the effort was not automatically wrong. You reassess what you have learned, what information has been added, and what next step is reasonable.

This attitude also protects against a modern misunderstanding of professional self-improvement. Not every failure proves that you learned too little, marketed yourself poorly, or recognized changes too late. Labor markets are not perfectly fair systems. Chance, origin, health, regional differences, and the decisions of other people influence the outcome.

The reservation clause allows you to take responsibility for your actions without burdening yourself with full responsibility for every result.

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 5.20

Stoicism Must Not Become an Ideology of Adaptation

Advice on resilience can contain a problematic message: If you suffer under uncertain working conditions, you must simply become calmer, more flexible, and more productive. Structural problems are thus reinterpreted as personal weaknesses.

This does not correspond to the social dimension of ancient Stoicism. The Stoics understood humans as part of a community of mutual obligations. Rational action concerns not only one’s own peace of mind but also justice and responsibility toward others.

A Stoic reaction to AI can therefore consist of you further educating yourself. It can also mean demanding transparency regarding automated decisions, exchanging views with colleagues, joining an advocacy group, or advocating for fair transition regulations.

If a company privatizes productivity gains exclusively and leaves the risks to the employees, that is not a force of nature. It is an organizational and political decision. You do not control this decision alone, but you can influence it together with others.

Inner stability and external resistance do not exclude each other. Precisely because you do not control every result, you need the ability to act deliberately and persistently.

A Stoic Action Plan for the AI Future

Adaptability grows when technical skill and human judgment develop together.

You can translate the philosophical concepts into a practical routine.

First: Limit your news consumption. Set one or two fixed times per week at which you inform yourself about developments in your industry. Prefer reports on actual applications and employment trends. Avoid predictions that immediately convert technical possibilities into concrete loss figures.

Second: Break down your profession into tasks. Do not just note your job title. List what you actually do. Subsequently, mark tasks that AI can likely automate, tasks where it could support you, and tasks that require judgment, relationship, responsibility, or context knowledge.

Third: Check the development of your competence. For every automated task, ask what knowledge you still need to control the result. If you hand over a learning step to AI, create another way to train the underlying skill.

Fourth: Conduct a limited experiment. Choose a relevant AI tool and use it for four weeks for a clearly defined task. Document where it saves time, where errors occur, and what expertise you need for evaluation. In this way, you transform an abstract threat into observable experience.

Fifth: Develop a competence portfolio. Do not focus exclusively on one specific program. Tools can disappear quickly. More lasting are skills such as problem analysis, clear communication, quality checking, industry knowledge, and responsible decision-making. Combine at least one technical skill with a human or professional strength.

Sixth: Strengthen your mobility. Update your resume, document work results, and maintain contacts before a crisis occurs. Check which of your skills are transferable to other roles. A small financial cushion can also create room for maneuver, provided your situation allows it.

Seventh: Distinguish responsibility from sole responsibility. Companies, politics, unions, and education systems bear responsibility for further training, social security, and fair transitions. Stoic self-leadership does not exclude collective action. It helps you participate in it without making your entire stability dependent on immediate success.

You Do Not Need Certainty to Act Rationally

No one can seriously promise you that your job is safe from AI. Similarly, today’s technical capabilities cannot reliably be used to conclude that your profession will disappear.

The Stoic answer to this uncertainty is not to tell yourself that everything will turn out well. It consists of distinguishing more clearly: between an impression and a fact, between an action and its result, between preparation and endless worry.

You cannot determine which capabilities future AI systems will possess. You can, however, check, learn, experiment, maintain relationships, and participate in changes. Perhaps this does not protect you from every loss. However, it prevents a possible future from dominating your entire attention today.

Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus knew no artificial intelligence. They did know political upheavals, illness, economic loss, and the experience that external certainties can become fragile at any time. Their decisive insight was not that the future is not dangerous. It was that a rational and responsible life remains possible even when the future is open.

The fear of losing your job to artificial intelligence is no longer a niche phenomenon.
